1748 1789 Improving Merton Sandford Tale

31"x27" (79x69cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 24x20 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 31x27 inches (787x685mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Thomas Day: The Author of 'Sandford and Merton,' An Improving Tale" Thomas Day (1748-1789), depicted in this evocative portrait, was a prominent English author and editor during the late 18th century. Born on January 15, 1748, in Exeter, Devon, Day is best known for his groundbreaking children's book, "Sandford and Merton: or, the History of Two Boys," published in 1783. This influential work, considered one of the first English novels for children, combined education and entertainment, making it a significant precursor to the modern children's literature genre. Day's upbringing in a bookselling family exposed him to the world of literature at an early age. He began his career as a bookseller in London before turning to writing. His literary contributions extended beyond "Sandford and Merton," as he also authored several other works, including "The History of Sandford and Merton," "The History of the Young Duke of Clarence," and "The History of the Young Duke of York." Day's writing style was marked by a strong moral compass and a focus on the educational and character development of young protagonists. His works were designed to entertain and instruct, making them popular among both children and adults. Day's impact on children's literature was significant, paving the way for future authors such as Charles Dickens and Lewis Carroll. The portrait of Thomas Day captures the intensity and intellectual curiosity of this influential author. His piercing gaze and the stack of books at his feet serve as a testament to his lifelong dedication to literature and learning. The date range of 1748 to 1789 in the image provides context to Day's era and further emphasizes his historical significance as a pioneering figure in children's literature.
