17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the stark reality of the mining complex and slag heap at Loos, France, during the First World War. The image, taken on February 18, 1916, provides a glimpse into the industrial scale of the war effort, with piles of slag and machinery dominating the landscape. At the heart of this scene is 313870 Gunner Vivian John Cummings, a soldier of the 3rd Canadian Division, Canadian Expeditionary Force. Born on July 31, 1875, Cummings was a member of the 1st Canadian Tunneling Company, part of the Topographical Engineers. His role in the war involved digging tunnels and mining enemy positions, a dangerous and crucial task that required a high level of skill and expertise. This photograph offers a rare insight into the environment in which Cummings and his comrades worked, with the mining complex serving as both a base of operations and a constant reminder of the destructive power of war. The 3rd Canadian Division played a significant role in the Battle of Loos, which took place in September 1915. The battle was one of the largest and bloodiest of the war for the Canadians, with over 6,000 casualties. Despite the heavy losses, the battle is considered a turning point in the war for the Allies, as it marked the first large-scale use of chlorine gas by the Germans and the first major success for the Canadian Corps. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers like Gunner Cummings during the First World War. It also serves as a testament to the industrial might that was harnessed to support the war effort, with mining complexes like the one at Loos playing a crucial role in the production of munitions and the digging of tunnels for offensive and defensive purposes.
