Botanist Glasgow Hooker Professor Scientist

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the intellectual brilliance and profound dedication of Sir William Hooker (1785-1865), a pivotal figure in the world of Victorian botany. Sir William Hooker, born on February 3, 1785, in Wakefield, England, is depicted here in the prime of his career as Professor of Botany at the prestigious University of Glasgow and the esteemed Director of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. During the 19th century, Hooker's groundbreaking work revolutionized the field of botany, and his contributions to the scientific community were nothing short of extraordinary. He was a prolific author, publishing numerous influential works, including the "Flora Scotia," which documented the flora of Scotland. Hooker's most notable achievement, however, was his role as the editor of the "Journal of the Linnean Society," a position he held from 1834 to 1865. Under his leadership, the journal became a leading platform for botanical research and innovation. Hooker's unwavering commitment to botany extended beyond his scholarly pursuits. He was a tireless explorer, leading numerous expeditions to collect new and rare plant specimens from around the world. His explorations led to the discovery and classification of countless new species, significantly expanding the world's botanical knowledge. This evocative portrait, taken in the mid-19th century, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of botanical knowledge. Hooker's legacy continues to inspire and influence the scientific community, making him a true icon of the Victorian era and a testament to the power of human curiosity and determination.
