17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Anton Raphael Mengs' Self-portrait, painted between 1761 and 1769, is a captivating testament to the artistic brilliance of this German painter during the 18th century. The portrait, now housed at the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain, offers a glimpse into the life and artistic vision of this influential Neoclassical artist. Born in 1728 in Weissenstein, Saxony, Mengs was a prolific painter, known for his mastery of various artistic styles, including the Baroque and Rococo. However, it was his Neoclassical works that would cement his place in art history. In this self-portrait, Mengs presents himself as a thoughtful, introspective artist, with a serious expression and piercing gaze. He wears a simple, dark robe, adorned with a red sash, and holds a palette and brushes in his hands, symbolizing his dedication to his craft. The portrait is framed by a rich, ornate gold border, adding an air of grandeur and importance to the image. The background is a dark, textured fabric, providing a striking contrast to the bright, illuminated foreground. The use of chiaroscuro, or the contrast between light and dark, adds depth and dimension to the painting, making Mengs' features stand out even more. Mengs' Self-portrait was painted during a significant period in his career. In 1771, he was appointed as the first painter to the Spanish King Charles III, a position he held until his death in 1779. The portrait reflects the artist's newfound status and his commitment to the Neoclassical style, which was favored by the Spanish court. This Self-portrait by Anton Raphael Mengs is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of European art, particularly Neoclassicism. It offers a glimpse into the life and artistic vision of a man who was not only a master painter but also a bohemian spirit, who pushed the boundaries of artistic expression in his time.
