17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the stoic figure of Private P.J. Hill, a Sand Pit Guard at Chislehurst, Kent, during the First World War. The image, taken in 1895, shows Private Hill in his military uniform, standing tall and alert, with a determined expression on his face. The sand pit, located in the picturesque countryside of Kent, served as an important training ground for soldiers during the war. Private Hill, a member of D Company in the 20th Battalion of the County of London Regiment, had a creative background before joining the military. He had studied at the prestigious Lambeth School of Art, located at St. Oswalds Place, Upper Kennington Lane in London. His artistic skills are not evident in this photograph, but his disciplined demeanor and posture suggest a strong sense of dedication and focus. The photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of soldiers during the war, and the topographical details of the sand pit add to its historical significance. The image also highlights the diversity of roles within the military, with Private Hill serving an essential function as a sand pit guard. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary men and women during the conflict and the various ways in which they contributed to the war effort. Private Hill's residence before joining the military was recorded as 6 Amott Road, Peckham Rye, London. This photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Prints Online collection, is a valuable addition to any collection of military history or topographical images of the First World War era.
