1840 Bred Herefordshire Ryeland Sheep Tomkins

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the essence of rural life in Herefordshire, England during the mid-19th century, as depicted in this image of a Ryeland ram and ewe, bred by Mr. Tomkins of Kingspion. The Ryeland breed, known for its distinctive curly wool, has a rich history that dates back to the 13th century. Mr. Tomkins, a skilled and dedicated farmer, is believed to have made significant contributions to the breed's development during this time. The ram, with his powerful build and majestic curls, stands proudly in the foreground, his intense gaze fixed on the viewer. The ewe, with her graceful form and gentle expression, rests in the background, her curls cascading down her sides. The scene is set against a backdrop of lush, green pastureland, dotted with wildflowers and tall trees, creating a serene and idyllic atmosphere. The photograph, taken circa 1840, offers a glimpse into a bygone era, a time when agriculture was the backbone of rural communities and farmers like Mr. Tomkins played a vital role in shaping the agricultural landscape. The Ryeland sheep, with their unique characteristics, have continued to captivate farmers and enthusiasts alike, making them a cherished part of agricultural history. This photograph, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, is not only a beautiful work of art but also a valuable historical document, providing insight into the agricultural practices and rural life of the past. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our agricultural heritage and the role that farmers, like Mr. Tomkins, continue to play in shaping our food systems and rural communities.
