23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the aftermath of one of the most significant events in ancient Greek history: the sacking of Athens by the Roman army under the command of Sulla in 88 BC. The once great and prosperous city lies in ruins, with its proud citizens left to mourn the destruction of their cultural heritage. The Roman invasion of Greece was a turning point in the power dynamics of the Mediterranean world. At the time, Athens was a key player in the Hellenistic world, a center of learning and culture. But following the death of the Roman general Lucius Cornelius Sulla's rival, Mithridates VI of Pontus, Sulla turned his attention to Greece, seeing it as a threat to Rome's dominance. Sulla's army, numbering around 30,000 men, marched on Athens, and the city's defenders, outnumbered and outmatched, were unable to prevent the Romans from entering the city. The Romans looted the temples and public buildings, taking valuable statues, artworks, and other treasures back to Rome as spoils of war. The city's population was sold into slavery, and many of its scholars and intellectuals were forced into exile. This print, produced by Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the devastation wrought by the Roman invasion of Athens. The image shows the Acropolis, the ancient citadel that had once been the heart of Athenian civilization, now a smoldering ruin. The Parthenon, the temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, can be seen in the background, its once gleaming marble façade defaced and scarred by the ravages of war. The scene is one of desolation and despair, a poignant reminder of the fragility of human civilization and the destructive power of conquest.
