The illustration, created by the skilled botanical artist Edwin Dalton Smith and expertly engraved by F.W. Smith, is taken from Charles McIntosh's esteemed horticultural publication, "Flora and Pomona," published in 1829. Charles McIntosh (1794-1864), a renowned Scottish gardener who served the European aristocracy and royalty, penned numerous books on gardening and horticulture. McIntosh's collaborations with talented artists and engravers, such as Edwin Dalton Smith, resulted in stunning botanical illustrations that graced the pages of his works. The Brunswick fig tree, also known as the Common Fig or the Smyrna fig, is a beloved fruit tree that has been cultivated for centuries. Its large, glossy leaves and sweet, edible figs have made it a staple in gardens and orchards around the world. The ripe figs in this illustration are depicted in rich detail, their deep purple color and plump, succulent appearance inviting the viewer to reach out and touch their velvety surface. The intricate engraving technique employed by F.W. Smith brings the fig tree to life, capturing the delicate veining on the leaves and the intricate patterns on the figs. The handcoloring adds an additional layer of depth and vibrancy, making this illustration a true masterpiece of 19th-century botanical art. This illustration is a testament to the beauty and importance of the natural world, as well as the dedication and skill of the botanical artists and horticulturists of the past.
