23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored etching is Plate 70 from "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands" (1731-1743) by the renowned English naturalist Mark Catesby. The depicted subject is the Rallus limicola, or the Virginian Rail, a fascinating avian species native to the wetlands of North America. Catesby's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate rendering of the bird's long, slender body and brown plumage, which blends seamlessly with the marshy environment it inhabits. The Virginian Rail is shown in the act of wading through the shallow waters, its beady eyes scanning the surrounding area for prey. The background of the illustration is adorned with an array of stunning, native flowers, adding a vibrant touch of color to the scene. The blue and brown angiosperms, or flowering plants, are expertly rendered, showcasing the rich biodiversity of the wetlands. This etching is a testament to Catesby's groundbreaking work in documenting the natural history of the Americas during the 18th century. His illustrations were the first accurate records of many North American birds, mammals, reptiles, and plants, making them invaluable resources for scientific research and conservation efforts. The historic significance of this work is further highlighted by the fact that it was produced during a time when Europeans were first beginning to explore and settle the New World. Catesby's illustrations provided a window into a new and largely unknown world, and helped to foster a greater appreciation and understanding of the natural wonders of North America.
