1865 1889 Bidding Captured Confederate Davis Days Escort Farewell Jefferson Unionist

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image captures the moment of farewell between President Jefferson Davis and his Confederate escort on December 7, 1865, marking the end of the American Civil War. Davis, the charismatic leader of the Confederate States of America, stands resolute and determined, clad in his military uniform, as he bids farewell to his loyal soldiers. Two days later, on December 9, Unionist troops under the command of General William T. Sherman captured Davis in Irwinville, Georgia, effectively ending the Confederacy's resistance. The historical significance of this image lies in the symbolism of the moment. Davis's unwavering gaze and the salute from his soldiers reflect the unyielding spirit of the Confederacy and its people, despite the impending defeat. The image was captured in 1889, over two decades after the war's end, by an unknown photographer, and was later imported into the Iln archive. The American Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865, was a pivotal moment in American history. It resulted in the abolition of slavery and the reunification of the country, but it also left a deep scar on the nation's psyche. This image serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices and determination of those who fought in the war, and the complex legacy it left behind. President Davis, who served as the President of the Confederate States from February 1861 until his capture, was a central figure in the Confederate cause. His leadership and commitment to the Confederacy's independence were unwavering, and his capture marked the end of the Confederacy's military resistance. This image, with its haunting beauty and historical significance, is a testament to the enduring power of the past and the importance of remembering the lessons it holds for the future.
