23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving on steel depicts the Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius), a bird species that once graced North American skies in vast numbers but is now tragically extinct. The image was created by the skilled hands of Scottish engraver William Lizars, working from a drawing by the English artist and poet Edward Lear. The illustration is part of Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, published in Edinburgh in 1843. Edward Lear, best known today for his whimsical nonsense verse, was also an accomplished ornithological illustrator. His detailed and accurate drawings captured the beauty and intricacy of various bird species, including the Passenger Pigeon. This particular engraving showcases the bird's distinctive plumage - a blend of iridescent greens, purples, and blues, with a white underbelly and a red eye. The Passenger Pigeon, also known as Prideaux's Pigeon or the Wild Pigeon of North America, was once the most abundant bird species in the world. They traveled in flocks so large that they darkened the sky for hours as they flew. However, their numbers dwindled due to overhunting and habitat loss. The last known Passenger Pigeon, a female named Martha, died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914. This historical image serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of conservation efforts and the potential consequences of human actions on the natural world. The Passenger Pigeon's extinction is a stark reminder that every species has a role to play in the intricate web of life, and their loss can have far-reaching impacts.
