17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from the interwar era, Russians go about their daily lives wearing gas masks as a precaution against the threat of chemical warfare attacks. The image, dated 1932, captures the sense of unease and uncertainty that pervaded civil populations during this tumultuous period in history. The scene is set in a bustling urban environment, with people and horses navigating the streets and alleys. Some are seen typing at their desks, while others tend to their livestock or load goods onto carts. Yet, despite the mundane nature of their activities, an undercurrent of tension is palpable. The presence of gas masks, a common sight during the post-war era, underscores the ever-present fear of chemical attacks. The masks, with their distinctive filters and hoses, render the wearers virtually anonymous, transforming them into anonymous figures in a dystopian landscape. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the superfluous nature of these precautions, which were, in many ways, a product of the political instability and geopolitical tensions that marked the 1930s. The Geneva Protocol, which prohibited the use of chemical and biological weapons in warfare, was not adopted until 1925, leaving civil populations vulnerable to attack for several more years. Despite the ominous backdrop, there is a sense of resilience and determination in the faces of the Russians depicted in the photograph. They carry on with their daily tasks, undeterred by the looming threat of chemical warfare. The image is a testament to the human spirit, and the enduring capacity to adapt to even the most challenging circumstances. Overall, this photograph offers a unique and powerful glimpse into a pivotal moment in history, one that continues to resonate with us today. It is a poignant reminder of the importance of peace and the need for collective action to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction.
