Jumbo the elephant: his attempted removal
Jumbo the African elephant was purchased by the American showman P.T Barnum from the Zoological Society of London in 1882. Jumbos departure to America was covered with great interest in the British press. Depicted here is the failed initial attempt to remove Jumbo from the Zoological Gardens to commence his journey to America. Balking at his cage and refusing to enter it, it was later altered to better support him, and placed close to his stable door for him to become more accustomed to it.

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of resistance from Jumbo the African elephant during his attempted removal from the Zoological Gardens in London, England, in 1882. Purchased by the American showman P.T. Barnum from the Zoological Society of London, Jumbo's departure to America was met with great interest and excitement in the British press. However, as seen in this photograph from the Illustrated London News, the initial attempt to load Jumbo into his crate and cage for the journey proved unsuccessful. The massive elephant, known for his gentle demeanor and intelligence, balked at the sight of the cage and refused to enter it. In response, the cage was altered to better support Jumbo's size and was placed close to his stable door to help him become more accustomed to it. This image offers a rare glimpse into the complexities of transporting such a large and powerful animal during the Victorian era, and highlights Jumbo's unique personality and the care taken to ensure his wellbeing during the journey to his new home in America.
