17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This facsimile print showcases Roelandt Savery's iconic image of the extinct Dodo (Raphus cucullatus), as it was originally displayed in the Bellvedere at Vienna in 1628. The meticulously hand-colored lithograph, taken from Hugh Edwin Strickland and Alexander Gordon Melville's seminal work "The Dodo and its Kindred," published in London in 1848, offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of this enigmatic bird. Roelandt Savery's original painting, believed to be one of the earliest known depictions of the Dodo, is a testament to the artist's remarkable skill and attention to detail. The Dodo, a flightless bird native to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, was discovered by Dutch sailors in the late 16th century and quickly became an object of fascination due to its unusual appearance and rapid extinction. In this print, the Dodo is depicted standing on a rocky outcrop, its distinctive, plump body covered in a layer of downy feathers. Its large, round head is adorned with a prominent beak, and its legs and feet are shown in a naturalistic pose. In the background, an eel and a heron can be seen, providing context to the Dodo's ecological niche in its native habitat. The hand-coloring of this lithograph adds an extra layer of detail and vibrancy to the image, bringing the Dodo to life and making it a must-have for any ornithology enthusiast or collector of historical prints. This facsimile print is not only a beautiful work of art but also an important piece of natural history, offering a window into a time when the wonders of the natural world were still being discovered and documented.
