Commandant Mrs St Clair Stobart (Mabel Anne Stobart Greenhalgh, 1862-1954) and Serbian orderlies on horseback as she led the column in the retreat, en route for Petch (Pec), during the First World War. Mrs Stobart of the Womens National Service League had led a flying field hospital to the Serbian front line on behalf of the Serbian Relief Fund. Date: 22 November 1915

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

This evocative photograph captures the determined spirit of Commandant Mabel Anne Stobart Greenhalgh, also known as Mrs. Stobart, as she led a column of Serbian orderlies on horseback during the retreat from the Serbian front line on November 22, 1915. Mrs. Stobart, a British woman and a prominent member of the Women's National Service League, had traveled to Serbia on behalf of the Serbian Relief Fund to establish a flying field hospital to care for wounded soldiers. As the situation on the front line worsened, Mrs. Stobart and her team were forced to retreat towards Pec (Petch), a town in southern Serbia. In this image, we see Mrs. Stobart, dressed in a long coat and hat, riding confidently at the head of the column, with Serbian orderlies following closely behind on horseback. The rugged terrain and harsh winter conditions are evident in the background, with bare trees and snow-covered ground. Despite the challenges they faced, Mrs. Stobart and her team remained committed to their mission, providing essential medical care and support to the Serbian soldiers as they retreated.
