17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

Plate 21 - Edinburgh: A Chance Encounter of Philanthropy and Wealth, 1873 This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of Scottish philanthropy, as John Menzies of Pitfodels (d. 1843) and the Reverend Thomas Guthrie of Old Greyfriars Church (1803-1873) cross paths in the bustling streets of Edinburgh. John Menzies, a wealthy Scottish landowner and businessman, is depicted in his top hat and formal attire, while the Reverend Guthrie, a prominent churchman and philanthropist, is seen in his clerical robes. Guthrie was a tireless advocate for the education and welfare of the city's impoverished children, and is best known for his establishment of the Ragged Schools movement in Scotland. The encounter between these two influential figures is believed to have taken place in the late 1860s or early 1870s, and marked the beginning of a significant partnership between Menzies and Guthrie. Menzies became a generous supporter of Guthrie's philanthropic endeavors, providing financial assistance and resources to help expand the Ragged Schools and improve the lives of Edinburgh's most vulnerable citizens. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the power of chance encounters and the transformative impact of philanthropy on individuals and communities. The meeting between Menzies and Guthrie serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of compassion and generosity that has long defined Scotland's rich cultural and historical legacy.
