GLC-LFB - Turntable Ladder at Plaistow

The GLC-LFB was created on 1 April 1965. A series of photos was commissioned of each type of fire engine, either within or absorbed into the enlarged London Fire Brigade. A Metz turntable ladder from Plaistow fire station ( L30) is seen here, mounted on a Dennis-Rolls Royce petrol engine appliance. This appliance was from Essex fire brigade, parts of which were absorbed into the London Fire Brigade in 1965

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a Metz turntable ladder (L30) of the Greater London Council-London Fire Brigade (GLC-LFB) at Plaistow fire station. The image was captured in the 1960s, following the creation of the GLC-LFB on 1 April 1965. Prior to this merger, parts of Essex Fire Brigade, including this appliance, were absorbed into the London Fire Brigade. The turntable ladder is mounted on a Dennis-Rolls Royce petrol engine appliance, a combination that was a common sight during the 1960s. The Metz turntable ladder, with its distinctive design, was a versatile piece of firefighting equipment, capable of reaching great heights and providing access to otherwise inaccessible areas. The ladder's turntable mechanism allowed it to rotate 360 degrees, enabling firefighters to maneuver it to the best position for tackling a fire. This appliance, with its powerful engine, was an essential part of the fire service's arsenal during this era. The Dennis-Rolls Royce engine provided the necessary power to transport the ladder to the scene of an incident, while the Metz ladder enabled firefighters to reach great heights and access burning buildings. The absorption of Essex Fire Brigade vehicles, such as this one, into the London Fire Brigade expanded the fleet and strengthened the capabilities of the newly formed GLC-LFB. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the evolution of firefighting equipment and the merger of fire services in London during the 1960s.
