The heroic Charlotte la Corde, upon her trial, at the bar of

The heroic Charlotte la Corde, upon her trial, at the bar of the revolutionary tribunal of Paris, July 17, 1793. Print shows Charlotte Corday standing before the judges of the Revolutionary Tribunal with the body of Marat which lying between them. She responds to the Tribunal, Wretches, I did not expect to appear before you - I always thought that I should be delivered up to the rage of the people, torn in pieces, & that my head, stuck on the top of a pike, would have preceded Marat on his state bed, to serve as a rallying point to Frenchmen, if there still are any worthy of that name. But, happen what will, if I have the honours of the guillotine, & my clay-cold remains are buried, they will soon have conferred upon them the honours of the Pantheon; and my memory will be more honoured in France than that of Judith in Bethulia.. 17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Charlotte Corday, the Heroic Avenger: A Defiant Stand at the Revolutionary Tribunal of Paris, July 17, 1793 This powerful print captures the moment of Charlotte Corday's trial before the Revolutionary Tribunal of Paris on July 17, 1793. The image shows Corday, a brave and determined woman, standing before the judges with the lifeless body of Jean-Paul Marat lying between them. Marat, a radical journalist and politician, had been notorious for his inflammatory writings and violent rhetoric, particularly against the monarchy and the aristocracy. Corday, a royalist sympathizer, had taken it upon herself to assassinate Marat, believing it was the only way to save her country from the chaos and violence that had engulfed it. As she stood before the tribunal, Corday spoke defiantly, declaring that she had expected to be handed over to the mob for their vengeance rather than standing before a court of law. She went on to say that even if she were to face the guillotine and be buried in an unmarked grave, her memory would still be honored in France, surpassing that of Judith, the biblical heroine who saved her people by assassinating Holofernes. Despite the controversial nature of her actions, Corday's bravery and conviction resonated with many in France, and her memory was indeed honored in the years to come. Although she was initially condemned to death, her body was later interred in the Panthéon, the prestigious mausoleum reserved for the most illustrious figures in French history. This print serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and tumultuous political climate of revolutionary France and the extraordinary actions of those who sought to shape its future.
