Flat Flounder Mixed Plaice Sole Species Spotty Turbot 1895 Halibut

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1895, showcases a vibrant and diverse grouping of flat fish, including halibut, turbot, flounder, plaice, and sole. The image, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, transports us back in time to a historical moment when the intricacies of marine life were just beginning to be explored. The flat fish in this photograph are arranged artfully on a table, their unique camouflaged patterns adding an element of visual interest. Each species is easily identifiable, with the halibut's large size and distinctive markings, the turbot's mottled brown and orange coloration, the flounder's speckled spots, the plaice's plain grayish-brown back, and the sole's white underbelly and brown upper side. The flat fish are a vital part of the marine ecosystem, and their ability to blend in with the seabed has long fascinated both scientists and fishermen. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of these fascinating creatures and the importance they hold in the natural world. The photograph's historical significance is further emphasized by the fact that it was taken over a century ago, a time when our understanding of marine life was still in its infancy. Today, we continue to learn more about these species and the role they play in the intricate web of marine life. This photograph is not only a beautiful representation of the natural world but also a reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting the marine environment for future generations to enjoy and study. The flat fish in this image may have been caught for scientific purposes, but their value extends far beyond their use as a resource. They are a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world and serve as a reminder of the importance of understanding and appreciating the natural world around us.
