Bowles Georgian Gouache Mezzotint Carington Matter

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The First Interview, or Happiness Sacrificed to Riches, is a captivating hand-coloured mezzotint print from the 18th century, created in 1784. This single print, measuring an impressive vertical size, was printed on laid paper and sold by the renowned English engraver, Carington Bowles, based in London. The intricate design was achieved through a laborious process of etching and hand-colouring, using watercolour and gouache. The image portrays a poignant scene of a woman and two men, gathered in a domestic interior. The woman, dressed in blue, sits demurely on a chair, her face a picture of melancholy as she looks down at her hands. The two men, both in grey attire, stand before her, one holding a letter and the other a hat. The atmosphere is heavy with tension and unspoken emotions. The use of colour adds depth and emotion to the print. The blue of the woman's dress contrasts sharply with the grey tones of the men's clothing, highlighting the stark difference between their worlds. The vertical composition of the image draws the viewer's eye upwards, adding to the sense of heightened emotion and importance. This print is a poignant reminder of the Georgian era, a time when the pursuit of wealth and status often came at the cost of personal happiness. The image invites the viewer to ponder the sacrifices made in the name of love, ambition, and social climbing. The intricate detail and masterful use of colour make this a truly stunning addition to any collection of historical prints or art.
