23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate print showcases the European Nightjar, Caprimulgus europaeus, a fascinating nocturnal bird native to Europe and Asia. The image is taken from Edward Donovan's "Natural History of British Birds," published in London between 1794 and 1819. Donovan, a renowned ornithologist and artist, meticulously drew and engraved each plate himself, resulting in a high level of detail and accuracy. The European Nightjar is characterized by its cryptic plumage, which helps it blend seamlessly into its surroundings during the day. Its wings are adorned with intricate patterns of brown, gray, and white, while its underbelly is a pale, mottled gray. The bird's beak is short and curved, and its eyes are large and round, enabling it to hunt effectively in the dark. European Nightjars are known for their unusual hunting methods. They rely on their excellent camouflage to remain hidden during the day, and at night, they use their distinctive "churring" call to attract insects, which they catch in mid-air while hovering just above the ground. This beautiful illustration is a testament to Donovan's skill as an artist and his dedication to documenting the natural world. It offers a glimpse into the past, providing us with a valuable record of the European Nightjar and its habitat during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The intricate details captured in this hand-colored copperplate print continue to captivate ornithologists and natural history enthusiasts alike, making it a treasure in the field of historical ornithology.
