Accuse Cannibals Colonialism Giving Grinning Pith Propaganda Satire Whiskers

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This thought-provoking image, titled "English Help Cannibals," is a satirical print from the late 19th century, created during the height of European colonialism. The print, held in the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, depicts a grinning Englishman in pith helmet, holding out a group of African children towards a group of cannibals. The Frenchman, standing to the side, points an accusing finger at the Englishman, suggesting the allegation that the English were giving the African cannibals children to eat. The use of satire in this print is a powerful commentary on the politics and propaganda of the time. European powers were vying for control over African territories, and accusations of barbaric practices were often leveled against each other. This print, with its exaggerated and caricatured depictions, serves to challenge the dominant narrative of European superiority and the justification of colonialism. The image is also a reminder of the complex and often problematic relationship between Europe and Africa during this period. The Englishman's whiskered face and smug expression convey a sense of arrogance and entitlement, while the cannibals are portrayed as savage and otherworldly. The children, who are the intended victims, are depicted as passive and helpless, adding to the sense of tragedy and injustice. Despite its provocative title, it is important to note that this print is not an actual record of historical events, but rather a reflection of the political climate and attitudes of the time. It serves as a reminder of the complex and often distorted narratives that have shaped our understanding of history, and the importance of critically examining sources to uncover the truth.
