23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing and captivating handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from William Frederic Martyn's New Dictionary of Natural History published in Harrison, London, in 1785, showcases a fascinating assemblage of animals from different continents and habitats. At the center of the image stands the extinct Dodo, Raphus cucullatus, a flightless bird native to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The Dodo is depicted with its distinctive round body, large beak, and feathers covering its entire body. Surrounding the Dodo are three other animals: a dromedary camel, a dragonfly, and a dogfish. The camel, native to the desert regions of Africa and the Middle East, is shown with its distinctive hump and long, curved neck. The dragonfly, a common insect found in various parts of the world, is depicted in mid-flight, its wings spread wide and its long, slender body in motion. The dogfish, a small shark found in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, is shown swimming in the water below the other animals. This engraving is a testament to the natural history knowledge of the late 18th century and the skill of the engraver in bringing these diverse creatures to life. The handcoloring adds an additional layer of detail and vibrancy, making this image a true work of art. This engraving is an important historical document, providing a glimpse into the natural world of over 200 years ago. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and studying the natural world, as the Dodo, once abundant on Mauritius, is now extinct. The image is a beautiful example of the intersection of science, art, and history, and a reminder of the rich biodiversity that exists on our planet.
