23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate engraving depicts the enigmatic and extinct Dodo, Raphus cucullatus. The Dodo was a flightless bird endemic to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Discovered by Dutch sailors in the late 15th century, the Dodo quickly became a source of fascination for European naturalists due to its unique appearance and size, with some specimens reaching up to 36 inches in length and weighing as much as 50 pounds. The image, published in The Naturalist's Pocket Magazine in Harrison, London, in the year 1800, is a testament to the meticulous work of the naturalist illustrators of the time. The intricate details of the Dodo's plumage, beak, and feet are beautifully rendered, showcasing the skill and artistry of the engraver. The handcoloring further enhances the image, adding vibrant hues to the Dodo's feathers and bringing the bird to life. The Dodo's story is a tragic one, as it was driven to extinction within a few decades of its discovery due to habitat loss and hunting by sailors and settlers. The bird's lack of ability to fly and its trusting nature made it an easy target. Today, the Dodo is a symbol of the fragility of island ecosystems and the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species. This engraving is not only a valuable historical record of a bird that once roamed the earth, but also a testament to the beauty and intrigue of the natural world. The Dodo's story serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world for future generations to marvel at and learn from.
