Compendium Deal Devil Edition Xylography Maleficarum Persons

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

Deal with the Devil

EDITORS COMMENTS
- Scene VI, Compendium Maleficarum, 1608, London, The British Library This haunting illustration, taken from Scene VI of the Compendium Maleficarum, published in London in 1608, depicts a pivotal moment in a macabre tale of a deal with the devil. The woodcut print, created through the process of xylography, showcases an ominous gathering of people huddled around a table, their faces etched with fear and trepidation. At the head of the table, the devil, depicted as a grotesque figure with horns, cloven hooves, and a menacing grin, strikes a deal with a white-robed man. The man, with a desperate and pleading expression, extends his hand towards the devil, offering him a child. The devil, in turn, accepts the offering with a sinister smile. Surrounding the central figures, a group of people, including children, look on in horror. Their faces are contorted with fear and shock, their eyes wide with disbelief. The scene is set against a dark, ominous background, further emphasizing the sense of dread and foreboding. This illustration, part of the Compendium Maleficarum, a compendium of witchcraft, was a popular publication during the European witch hunts. It was used as a guide for identifying and prosecuting witches, and this scene, in particular, serves as a warning of the dangers of making deals with the devil. The British Library, located in London, United Kingdom, houses this rare and intriguing piece of history, a testament to the darker aspects of human history and folklore.
