The Czars Bedroom, SY Livadia, 1880

Engraving of Czar Alexander IIs bedroom on his steam yacht Livadia, built at John Elders shipyard, Govan, in 1880. Extremely lavishly fitted out, this yacht was given a radical design, supposedly based on the shape of a turbot. This flat fish design, 235 foot long, 153 foot wide at its beamiest and with only 6 foot draught, was very unsuccessful, with passengers complaining of extreme seasickness. The Livadia was broken up in 1927

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the opulence of Czar Alexander II's bedroom on board his steam yacht, Livadia, built at John Elder's shipyard in Govan, Scotland, in 1880. The yacht, which measured an impressive 235 feet in length and 153 feet at its widest point, was famously designed in the shape of a turbot, a flat fish. Supposedly, this radical design was meant to provide a stable and smooth sailing experience, but in reality, the yacht's shallow 6-foot draught and extreme width proved to be unsuccessful. Passengers reported experiencing severe seasickness, and the Livadia was eventually broken up in 1927. Despite its shortcomings, the Livadia was an engineering marvel of its time. Extremely lavishly fitted out, the yacht was a symbol of the czar's wealth and power. The bedroom, shown in this print, is a testament to the extravagance of the era, with ornate furnishings, rich fabrics, and fine details. The flat fish design, while unsuccessful in practice, was a bold and innovative approach to yacht design that continues to capture the imagination of historians and maritime enthusiasts. This historical print, dating back to 1927, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of grandeur and luxury on the high seas. The Livadia may have been an unsuccessful vessel in terms of seaworthiness, but it remains an important part of maritime history.
