Caractacus before Claudius

Caractacus before Claudius. Caractacus was a British King who fought against the Roman invaders. The Romans won the battle by ambushing the Britons, capturing Caractacuss wife, daughter and brother. Caractacus sought the protection of Cartimandua, Queen of the Brigantes, but he was betrayed and she sent him, in chains, to Rome where he faced the Emperor Claudius. Whilst being led to the Emperor, Caractacus was impressed by the beauty of Rome, sentiments he passed on to Claudius along with his surprise that Claudius wanted to capture Britain, which was so poor compared to the greatest city in the world. Claudius was so flattered and taken aback at this bravery that he granted Caractacus his freedom.

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Caractacus Before Claudius: A Moment of Surprise and Respect in Ancient Rome (circa 50 AD) This engraving captures the historic encounter between Caractacus, the brave British King, and Emperor Claudius of Rome. Caractacus, a valiant leader who fiercely resisted Roman invasion, had been betrayed by Cartimandua, Queen of the Brigantes, and was led in chains to Rome. As he approached the Emperor, Caractacus was struck by the grandeur and beauty of the Roman Empire, a stark contrast to his own war-torn Britain. Despite his captivity, Caractacus expressed his admiration for the Roman Empire to Claudius. He was surprised that such a powerful and wealthy civilization sought to conquer a land as poor as Britain. Claudius, taken aback by Caractacus's bravery and eloquence, granted him his freedom. This unexpected act of mercy showcased the complexities of power and respect between two great leaders. The intricate details in this 1820s engraving transport us back to a pivotal moment in history, where the might of Rome met the spirit of a British King. The chains that bind Caractacus serve as a reminder of the political and military struggles of the time, while the backdrop of Rome symbolizes the enduring power and influence of the Roman Empire. This image offers a glimpse into the past, inviting us to reflect on the intricacies of human interaction and the enduring allure of ancient history.
