Pauper Workhouse Workhouses

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the quiet and somber atmosphere of a Camberwell Union Scattered Home in the year 1903. The image offers a glimpse into the lives of pauper children who, due to poverty and hardship, were removed from their families and placed in the care of the Camberwell Union Workhouse. The Scattered Homes were established as an alternative to the overcrowded and often inhumane conditions of the workhouses. Small groups of children lived in these homes, which were usually located in private houses or cottages in the community. The children were provided with basic education, food, and shelter, but life was still far from easy. In this photograph, we see a group of young boys seated around a table, engaged in what appears to be a lesson. Their expressions are serious, and their clothing is worn and threadbare. The room is sparsely furnished, with a simple table and benches, and a fireplace in the background. The walls are adorned with a few posters and pictures, and a window lets in a small amount of natural light. Despite the harsh realities of their circumstances, the children in the Scattered Homes were given a chance at a better life than they would have had in the workhouse. The system was far from perfect, but it was a step in the right direction towards providing care and support for those in need. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the past, and the resilience and determination of the children who lived through it.
