1790 Badger Bewick Capensis Curiously Excessively Fond Honey Lives Mellivora Named Pooh Ratel

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, sourced from Mary Evans Picture Library, showcases the enchanting and tenacious Bewick's Honey Badger, scientifically known as Mellivora capensis or Ratel. Named curiously after the famous children's character Winnie the Pooh due to its insatiable love for honey, this mustelid species is an intriguing resident of South Africa. Honey Badgers, historically known for their fearless nature, have been documented since the late 18th century. In 1790, Thomas Bewick, a renowned English naturalist and printmaker, created this illustration, capturing the essence of this remarkable creature. The Bewick's Honey Badger is not only known for its affinity towards honey but also for its incredible strength and resilience. Weighing around 2.5 kilograms, it is one of the most powerful animals relative to its size. Despite its small stature, the Honey Badger is not an animal to be trifled with. It fearlessly tackles larger predators, such as leopards and hyenas, to protect its territory and food sources. Its unique adaptations, including a thick coat of quills and powerful jaws, make it an unyielding force in the African wilderness. This print not only serves as a testament to the natural world's wonders but also highlights the importance of preserving the diverse wildlife that calls South Africa home. The Bewick's Honey Badger, with its endearing nickname and unwavering spirit, continues to inspire curiosity and admiration among nature enthusiasts and scientists alike.
