Runway construction JLP01_01_007_05
FILTON AIRFIELD, SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE. An aerial view showing trucks and workmen on the runway at Filton Airfield during concreting.
Laing extended the runway westwards at Filton Airfield to accommodate the Bristol Brabazon airliner, which was being built at the airfield. Work began in July 1946 on the new runway, which was 2, 725 yards long and 100 yards wide. The work required the requisitioning and removal of Charlton village and a temporary flying strip was laid, for use while the new runway was under construction. The negative of this print was digitised and catalogued as part of the Britain from Above project

1940s Airfield Construction Runway
17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view captures the bustling activity of runway construction at Filton Airfield in South Gloucestershire during the 1940s. The photograph showcases a fleet of trucks and diligent workmen diligently working on concreting the extended runway. Filton Airfield was undergoing expansion to accommodate the impressive Bristol Brabazon airliner, which was being constructed at this very location. In July 1946, Laing commenced their ambitious project to extend the runway westwards. The new runway spanned an impressive length of 2,725 yards and measured 100 yards wide. To facilitate this significant undertaking, Charlton village had to be requisitioned and removed from its original location. As a temporary measure, a flying strip was laid down for use while construction progressed on the new runway. The digitized negative print showcased here is part of Historic England's Britain from Above project and has been catalogued by Aerofilms Limited. It offers us a unique glimpse into the past as we witness history in motion – witnessing dedicated workers shaping an essential infrastructure that would soon serve as a vital lifeline for aviation enthusiasts. This snapshot serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination during times of rapid progress in aviation technology. It reminds us how even seemingly ordinary tasks like constructing runways played an integral role in shaping our world today.
