Bletchley Leisure Centre JLP01_09_753016

Bletchley Leisure Centre, Bletchley, Milton Keynes. An elevated view of Bletchley Leisure Centre from the south-west, showing the boating lake, swimming pool, entrance block and raised covered entrance walkway.
In 1971 Laing announced they would be constructing a leisure centre at Bletchley for Bletchley Urban District Council, to replace an outdoor swimming pool. Further contracts covered Phase II and Phase III and included a swimming pool, squash courts, a boating lake and ancillary works. The complex was completed in 1974. A new leisure centre was opened in 2009, replacing the centre built by Laing

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Bletchley Leisure Centre in all its glory. Taken from an elevated view, the image showcases the various amenities that made this centre a hub of recreational activities in Milton Keynes. From the boating lake to the swimming pool, every aspect of this complex was designed with sport and leisure in mind. Constructed by Laing in 1971, this state-of-the-art facility replaced an outdoor swimming pool and quickly became a beloved landmark for residents of Bletchley. The Phase II and Phase III contracts added squash courts, further enhancing the range of activities available to visitors. The futuristic design elements are evident in the raised covered entrance walkway, which adds a touch of elegance to the overall structure. This architectural marvel truly stood out against its surroundings and became an iconic symbol of progress during that era. Although a new leisure centre has since taken its place as technology advanced over time, this photograph serves as a nostalgic reminder of how Bletchley's community came together at this recreation center throughout the 1970s. It stands as a testament to both innovation and enjoyment - two key aspects that have always been valued by society when it comes to sports and recreation.
