Pieneman - General Rowland Hill N070457

APSLEY HOUSE, London. General Rowland Hill (1772-1842), sketched by Jan Willem PIENEMAN in 1821 (WM 1479-1948). A Peninsular veteran and accomplished commander in his own right, at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, Hill commanded the II Corps. He led the charge of Sir Frederick Adams brigade against the Imperial Guard towards the end of the battle. For some time it was thought that he had fallen in the melee but he escaped unwounded. He was made Viscount Hill of Almaraz in 1842

Georgian Military Painting Waterloo

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print showcases a sketch of General Rowland Hill, a prominent military figure during the Georgian era and a key commander in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The sketch was created by the skilled Dutch artist, Jan Willem Pieneman, in the year 1821 and is now held at Apsley House in London (WM 1479-1948). Born in 1772, Hill rose through the ranks as a Peninsular War veteran and an accomplished military leader in his own right. At the Battle of Waterloo, he commanded the II Corps and led the charge of Sir Frederick Adams brigade against the formidable Imperial Guard towards the end of the battle. For a time, it was believed that Hill had fallen in the fierce melee, but he managed to escape unscathed. In recognition of his valor, Hill was granted the title Viscount Hill of Almaraz in 1842. The intricately detailed sketch captures the intensity and focus of Hill's gaze, reflecting the unwavering determination that guided him through his military career. The photograph print offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of war and heroism, when men like General Rowland Hill played a pivotal role in shaping history. This image is a testament to the courage and leadership that defined the Georgian era and the Battle of Waterloo, making it an invaluable addition to any military or historical collection.
