Henge and ringwork, Hornsea 28086_011

Neolithic henge reused as a Bronze Age ringwork in Hornsea, East Yorkshire
Historic Englands aerial reconnaissance team spotted the buried remains of this rare and unusual prehistoric site during a dry summer. The layout of the site with the central circular feature, suggests that it was a Neolithic henge. The monument lies on slightly elevated ground, with open water likely to have surrounded it on three sides prior to subsequent silting and drainage in more recent centuries. The henge is surrounded by a field system. This suggests that it was reused in the Bronze Age as a settlement. The importance of this site led it to be protected as a scheduled monument

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Henge and ringwork of Hornsea, located in East Yorkshire. Discovered by Historic England's diligent aerial reconnaissance team during a dry summer, this prehistoric site holds immense historical significance. The layout of the monument, featuring a central circular feature, strongly suggests that it was originally constructed as a Neolithic henge. Situated on slightly elevated ground, this extraordinary site would have been surrounded by open water on three sides before silting and drainage altered its landscape over time. What makes this discovery even more intriguing is the presence of a field system encircling the henge, indicating its reuse as a Bronze Age settlement. Recognizing its exceptional importance to our understanding of ancient civilizations, this site has been designated as a scheduled monument for protection. This ensures that future generations can appreciate and learn from its rich history. Dave MacLeod's expertly captured aerial perspective allows us to marvel at the intricate details preserved within these buried remains. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time to an era when our ancestors roamed these lands and built awe-inspiring structures like the Henge and ringwork of Hornsea.
