Comb Kitagawa Utamaro Oban See Through Shimada Tortoiseshell Transparent Utamaro Kitagawa Colour Woodblock Print

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Woman Holding a Tortoise-shell Hair-comb, Japan, c. 1795/96" by Kitagawa Utamaro transports us back to the Edo period in 18th century Japan. The artist's mastery of the woodblock printing technique is evident in this exquisite piece displayed at the Art Institute of Chicago. In this artwork, we see a graceful Japanese woman delicately holding a tortoiseshell hair-comb known as Shimada. Her elegant hand gesture and mesmerizing hairstyle reflect the beauty and sophistication of traditional Japanese culture during that time. Utamaro's use of color and transparency adds an unusual dimension to this ukiyo-e print, allowing us to glimpse through the delicate comb as if it were made from sheer fabric. This artistic choice highlights both the craftsmanship involved in creating such intricate hair accessories and the concept of beauty being seen but not fully revealed. As we admire this heritage art piece, we are transported to a different era where women adorned themselves with elaborate hairstyles and carefully crafted combs like these were considered precious heirlooms. Utamaro's attention to detail captures not only the physical attributes but also conveys a sense of grace and femininity that transcends time. This artwork serves as a testament to Utamaro Kitagawa's skill as an artist and his ability to immortalize moments from history through his woodblock prints. It invites us into a world where tradition meets artistry, leaving us captivated by its beauty
