Smiling Self-portrait, from the Side, 1661. Creator: Moses ter Borch
Smiling Self-portrait, from the Side, 1661. Moses ter Borch was one of the few artists in the second half of the 17th century who, inspired by Rembrandt's self-portraits, frequently studied his own face. The young artist recorded himself with different expressions in these three studies. Thus he is not looking out at us, but rather examining his reflection in a mirror

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Moses ter Borch's Smiling Self-portrait from the Side, created in 1661, is a captivating monochrome drawing that showcases the young artist's introspective nature and artistic mastery. Ter Borch, a Dutch artist of the 17th century, was deeply inspired by Rembrandt's self-portraits and frequently depicted his own face with various expressions. In this stunning work, Ter Borch is not gazing out at the viewer but rather examining his reflection in a mirror. The artist skillfully captures the subtle nuances of his facial expression, conveying a sense of calm and self-assuredness. Ter Borch's use of chalk, ink, and watercolor on paper creates a striking contrast between the grey tones of his clothing and the white of his shirt, adding depth and texture to the image. This self-portrait is a testament to the artistic heritage of the Dutch Golden Age and the enduring influence of Rembrandt. Ter Borch's depiction of himself, with its thoughtful composition and intricate details, invites us to reflect on the artist's introspective process and the role of self-portraiture in the history of art.
