Reconnoitring at Cronstadt, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Reconnoitring at Cronstadt, 1854. Crimean War. Fort Peter I.; Fort Alexander; Fort Menschikoff; "Bulldog"; "Phlegethon", French screw; Russian steamer; "Magicienne"; "Lightning", sounding in shore; Risbank Fort...as soon as the tall masts of the Russian ships in harbour...were descried from the topmast heads, great excitement prevailed through the [English] fleet...One or two ships were...looking out for the "infernal machines." All the ships had watches posted in their tops, reporting every floating log of wood that bore any resemblance to a buoy - an appendage said to be attached to all those submarine traps...Cautiously the buoys were approached...the chains to which they were attached were raised; and...their pendent burthen was...hauled on board...to the anxious looks of the discoverers was exhibited only a large stone. The infernal machines have not yet been found...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Reconnoitring at Cronstadt, 1854" is an intriguing photograph that captures a pivotal moment during the Crimean War. The image, taken from an unknown creator, depicts various ships from the English and French fleets engaged in a reconnaissance mission in the harbor of Cronstadt, Russia. The scene is dominated by the tall masts of Russian ships, with Fort Peter I, Fort Alexander, Fort Menschikoff, and other fortifications visible in the background. The English and French forces were on high alert, as rumors of Russian "infernal machines" or underwater explosives had been circulating. The discovery of these devices was a constant source of anxiety and fear among the Allied forces. As a result, ships were posted in the tops with watches, keeping a vigilant eye out for any floating logs or buoys that resembled the suspected traps. In the photograph, we see several ships, including the French screw "Phlegethon," a Russian steamer, and the English vessels "Magicienne" and "Lightning," sounding in the shore. The English ships carefully approached the buoys, raising their chains and hauling in their pendent burdens, only to find large stones. The infernal machines, it seemed, had eluded them once again. The excitement and tension are palpable in this historic image, as the Allied forces continued their search for the elusive Russian traps. The photograph is a testament to the dangers and uncertainties of war, as well as the determination and resourcefulness of the sailors and soldiers involved. Despite the constant threat of underwater explosives, the Allied forces pressed on with their reconnaissance missions, determined to gain the upper hand in the Crimean War.
