17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

Naumachia in the Courtyard of Palazzo Pitti, 1592

EDITORS COMMENTS
is an exquisite etching in black on cream laid paper by the 16th-century Italian artist Orazio Scarabelli. This artwork depicts a grand and elaborate spectacle that once took place in the courtyard of Palazzo Pitti in Florence, Tuscany, Italy. The scene is set during the marriage celebration of Christina of Lorraine, later known as Christine of Lorraine, to Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici in 1589. The Medici family, a powerful and influential dynasty in Italian history, spared no expense in creating an unforgettable event. One of the most memorable aspects of the festivities was the Naumachia, a mock naval battle, which was staged in the courtyard of Palazzo Pitti. In Scarabelli's depiction, we see the courtyard transformed into a watery arena, complete with ships, soldiers, and spectators. The Grand Duke, represented by Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici, stands at the center, watching the battle unfold with great interest. The intricate details of the ships, the ripple effect of the water, and the expressions of the soldiers and onlookers all contribute to the dynamic and lively atmosphere of the scene. This etching is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Italian Renaissance and the extravagant entertainments that were a hallmark of the Medici dynasty. Today, it is an invaluable addition to the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, where it continues to inspire and captivate audiences. The artwork serves as a reminder of the grandeur and sophistication of the past, and the enduring power of art to transport us to another time and place.
