Merino sheep, c1860
Merino sheep, c1860. Originating in Spain as long as 3000 years ago, the Merino was improved by the Moors in the Middle Ages. In 1789 two rams and four ewes, part of a gift from the king of Spain to the king of the Netherlands, were sent to South Africa having failed to thrive on the wet Dutch lowlands. This small flock was the origin of the Australian and South African flocks which now produce 80% of the worlds wool

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a group of Merino sheep, dating back to around 1860. Originating in Spain as early as 3000 years ago, the Merino breed underwent significant improvements during the Middle Ages under the influence of the Moors. However, it was not until 1789 that this particular breed gained global recognition. Two rams and four ewes from Spain were gifted to the king of the Netherlands but failed to thrive in their new wet Dutch lowland environment. Consequently, this small flock was sent to South Africa instead. Little did anyone know at that time that this decision would mark a turning point for wool production worldwide. The Australian and South African flocks descended from these original animals now contribute an astounding 80% of the world's wool supply. This remarkable achievement is a testament to centuries of careful breeding and agricultural practices. In this enchanting engraving, we witness nature's beauty intertwined with human ingenuity. The vibrant colors bring life to each individual sheep depicted, highlighting their significance in both agriculture and history. As we gaze upon this image captured by an unknown creator, we are reminded of how our ancestors shaped our present-day world through their dedication and perseverance in livestock breeding. This print serves as a visual reminder of humanity's deep connection with nature and its ability to transform raw materials into valuable resources like wool – all while honoring centuries-old traditions passed down through generations.
