The Loom of Penelope, from the Chuisi Vase, Etruscan, c400 BC (1930)

The Loom of Penelope, from the Chuisi Vase, Etruscan, c400 BC (1930). Penelope with her son, Telemachus. A scene from the Odyssey. While waiting for the return of her missing husband, Odysseus, Penelope delayed various suitors, claiming that she had first to finish weaving a burial shroud for Odysseuss elderly father, Laertes. Every night she would unpick the shroud, meaning that the task would never be finished. A print from A History of Tapestry, by WG Thomson, Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1930

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a timeless scene from Greek mythology - "The Loom of Penelope, from the Chuisi Vase". In this ancient Etruscan artwork dating back to around 400 BC, we witness the unwavering faithfulness and patience of Penelope, wife of the missing hero Odysseus. Seated at her loom with her young son Telemachus by her side, Penelope is depicted as a symbol of devotion and resilience. As she waits for her husband's return, she cunningly delays numerous suitors by claiming that she must first complete weaving a burial shroud for Odysseus's father. However, every night she secretly unravels the day's work to ensure that it remains unfinished. This powerful image beautifully portrays the strength and determination of women throughout history. It highlights not only Penelope's commitment to her family but also her resourcefulness in navigating challenging circumstances. The presence of weapons in the background reminds us of the ongoing war that separates Penelope from her beloved husband. Printed in 1930 as part of "A History of Tapestry" by WG Thomson, this photograph offers us a glimpse into an ancient world filled with mythological tales and heroic journeys. It serves as a reminder that even amidst adversity, love and loyalty can endure through time.
