Letter from Charles Edward Stuart to his brother Henry Benedict, 2nd November 1784. Artist: Charles Edward Stuart
Letter from Charles Edward Stuart to his brother Henry Benedict, 2nd November 1784. Letter, written in French from Florence, by The Young Pretender under his assumed title of King Charles III, to his brother and heir Henry Benedict, titular Duke of York, Cardinal Bishop of Frascati. The letter declares that his natural daughter (Charlotte, afterwards styled Duchess of Albany) having been recognised by himself, by France, and by the Pope, is Royal Highness for you and everywhere, disclaiming, however, any intention of disputing his brothers rights and praying him in return not to dispute those of his daughter. From the fifth series of Facsimiles of royal, historical, literary and other autographs in the Department of Manuscripts, British Museum: Series I-V. (London, 1899)

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historical artifact of immense significance - a letter written by Charles Edward Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie or The Young Pretender, to his brother Henry Benedict on the 2nd of November 1784. The letter was composed in French from Florence and bears the assumed title of King Charles III. In this heartfelt correspondence, Charles Edward declares that his natural daughter, Charlotte (later styled Duchess of Albany), has been recognized as Royal Highness by himself, France, and the Pope. He emphasizes her rightful status while simultaneously expressing no intention to challenge his brother's rights. Instead, he implores Henry Benedict not to dispute those belonging to their beloved daughter. The exquisite facsimile captures every detail of this handwritten manuscript with precision and clarity. It allows us to appreciate both the artistry in Charles Edward's penmanship and the weighty nature of its content. This remarkable piece serves as a testament to the complex dynamics within royal families during the 18th century. The presence of religious undertones is evident through references to Cardinal Bishop of Frascati held by Henry Benedict and their shared Roman Catholic faith. This adds another layer of intrigue and highlights how religion played an integral role in shaping political alliances during this era. As we gaze upon this extraordinary print, we are transported back in time - witnessing a pivotal moment where familial bonds intertwine with matters of succession and monarchy. It is a tangible connection to history that reminds us how personal relationships can shape destinies within realms both secular and divine.
