John Bell Hood, Confederate general, 1862-1867. Artist: J Rogers

John Bell Hood, Confederate general, 1862-1867. Hood (1831-1879) had a reputation for bravery, being one of the few Civil War generals who personally led his troops into combat on the field of battle. He lost the use of an arm after being wounded at Gettysburg, and had a leg amputated as a result of the wounds he suffered at Chickamauga. He returned to active duty however, being appointed commander of the Army of the Tennessee in July 1864. An engraving from volume III of The War with the South : a History of the Late Rebellion, by Robert Tomes, Benjamin G Smith, New York, Virtue & Yorston, 3 Volumes, 1862-1867

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of John Bell Hood, a Confederate general who played a significant role during the American Civil War from 1862 to 1867. The artist, J Rogers, skillfully portrays Hood's commanding presence and distinguished features in this engraving. Known for his exceptional bravery on the battlefield, Hood was one of the few generals who personally led his troops into combat. His unwavering courage earned him respect among both allies and adversaries alike. However, his dedication came at a great cost as he suffered severe injuries during key battles. At Gettysburg, Hood lost the use of an arm due to wounds sustained in action. Later, at Chickamauga, he endured further injuries that resulted in the amputation of his leg. Despite these setbacks, Hood demonstrated remarkable resilience by returning to active duty as commander of the Army of Tennessee in July 1864. The portrait showcases General Hood's strong physique and determined expression while donning his military uniform with pride. This image serves as a testament to not only his personal sacrifices but also to all those who fought valiantly during this tumultuous period in American history. J Rogers' artistic rendition immortalizes John Bell Hood's legacy as a fearless leader and symbolizes the indomitable spirit displayed by soldiers on both sides throughout this defining chapter in our nation's past.
