Fire and Water, The Magic Flute, 1816. Artist: Karl Friedrich Schinkel
Fire and Water, The Magic Flute, 1816. Stage design by Karl Freidrich Schinkel for The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflote), showing fire and water, two of the ordeals that Tamino, the hero, had to undergo before being received by Sarastro the High Priest in the temple of Isis and Osiris. The opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) with libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder (1751-1812) was first produced in Vienna in 1791. The plot has overtones of Freemasonry. Some say Queen of the Night is based on the Empress Maria Theresa (1717-1780)

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

Fire and Water, The Magic Flute, 1816 - A Captivating Stage Design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This mesmerizing print captures the enchanting stage design created by Karl Friedrich Schinkel for the opera "The Magic Flute" in 1816. The image showcases two powerful elements - fire and water - which symbolize the arduous trials that Tamino, the hero of this tale, must endure before being accepted into Sarastro's temple. "The Magic Flute" composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with a libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder, premiered in Vienna in 1791. Infused with mystical overtones of Freemasonry, this opera weaves together a complex plot that delves into themes of love, enlightenment, and spirituality. Schinkel's intricate set design transports us to an ancient Egyptian temple dedicated to Isis and Osiris. With vibrant colors and meticulous attention to detail, he brings forth a sense of grandeur befitting the divine nature of these deities. This fusion of German artistry with Egyptian aesthetics creates a visually stunning representation on stage. As we gaze upon this remarkable artwork from the late 18th century through early 19th century Germany-Austria era, we cannot help but marvel at its religious undertones and cultural significance. It is said that Queen of the Night characterizes Empress Maria Theresa herself—a testament to how historical figures can inspire artistic expression across centuries. This print serves as a reminder not only of Mozart's genius but also of Schinkel's mastery in creating immersive visual experiences within theatrical productions. It encapsulates both the magic inherent in "The Magic Flute" and our enduring fascination with ancient Egypt’s rich mythology.
