Female headdresses, 15th century, (1910)
Female headdresses, 15th century, (1910). The frontlet was composed of a piece of rigid wire netting covered with black material which passed over the head and allowed a small loop to appear on the forehead - this was designed to ease the strain on the hair caused by wearing the steeple headdress at an angle 45 degrees from the perpendicular. Illustration from British Costume during 19 Centuries by Mrs Charles H Ashdown, (London, 1910)

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 15th century, showcasing the intricate female headdresses of that era. The frontlet, depicted in this image from Emily Jessie Ashdown's book "British Costume during 19 Centuries" was a remarkable piece composed of rigid wire netting covered with black material. It elegantly passed over the head, allowing a small loop to appear on the forehead. One might wonder about the purpose behind such an elaborate design. The answer lies in its functionality - this unique frontlet aimed to alleviate strain on the hair caused by wearing the steeple headdress at an angle of 45 degrees from perpendicular. This ingenious solution demonstrates not only creativity but also practicality within medieval fashion. The monochrome aesthetic adds a touch of timelessness to this image, emphasizing its historical significance. As we gaze upon these female headdresses, we are transported back in time to England during the Middle Ages. The elegance and sophistication exuded by these women reflect both their status and their adherence to societal norms. Emily Jessie Ashdown's meticulous attention to detail allows us to appreciate every aspect of these headdresses - from their wimples and veils down to their geometric angles. Through her work, she brings forth a sense of admiration for British costume throughout centuries past.
