English Militia and Yeomanry Cavalry, 1854. Creator: Unknown

English Militia and Yeomanry Cavalry, 1854. British Army uniforms during the Crimean War. 4th Middlesex (officer); Yorkshire Hussars; Yeomanry Undress; Yeomanry Cavalry; 4th Middlesex; South Lincoln; Essex Rifles...The Illustration of the Militia Regiments...is perfectly correct as to costume; but the uniforms of the Yeomanry Cavalry there represented have not as yet been taken into general wear. The clothing of the first-mentioned force is supplied by the Ordnance, and, in texture, make, and sewing, is even inferior to that forced upon the line. Should the embodied regiments continue on permanent duty, the worthlessness of the dress, as regards durability and comfort, will be exemplified long before the period arrives which, by her Majesty's regulations, a fresh issue will be sanctioned'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, sourced from the esteemed archives of Heritage Images, showcases the English Militia and Yeomanry Cavalry during the Crimean War in 1854. The image, published in the Illustrated London News, features a diverse array of regiments, including the 4th Middlesex, Yorkshire Hussars, Essex Rifles, South Lincoln, and others. The Militia Regiments' uniforms are depicted accurately, but the Yeomanry Cavalry's attire, as shown in the print, had not yet been adopted for general use. The Militia's uniforms were supplied by the Ordnance, with texture, make, and sewing that were considered inferior. The soldiers are seen wearing heavy coats, casques, and carrying bayonets. In contrast, the Yeomanry Cavalry, dressed in undress uniforms, are shown wearing lighter, more comfortable clothing, which had not yet been sanctioned for widespread use. The image captures the essence of the era, with the cavalrymen mounted on their horses, their faces displaying a mix of determination and readiness. The horses, too, are depicted with intricate detail, their coats glossy and well-groomed. The print offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and military practices of the 19th century, providing a unique insight into the British Army during the Crimean War. The photograph print is a testament to the rich history of the British military, showcasing the uniforms, weapons, and daily life of the soldiers during this period. The print's historical significance and meticulous detail make it an invaluable addition to any collection, offering a captivating look into the past.
