1863 Edwin Forbes Letter News Paper Reading Union Union Army Yankee

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant pencil drawing by Edwin Forbes, titled "CIVIL WAR: SOLDIER. News From Home" we are transported back to the year 1863 in the midst of America's Civil War. The image captures a group of Union soldiers huddled together, seeking solace and connection with their loved ones through letters from home. The men, dressed in their worn-out uniforms, represent the middle-class Americans who left behind their families and comfortable lives to fight for what they believed in. With furrowed brows and intense concentration, they read each word on the precious piece of paper that brings them news from home. Forbes' meticulous attention to detail is evident as he skillfully portrays the weariness etched on their faces and the weight of responsibility resting upon their shoulders. Each soldier becomes an individual story within this larger narrative of sacrifice and dedication. This drawing serves as a reminder of the human side of war – beyond battles fought and territories won or lost – it highlights the longing for connection, comfort, and reassurance that even soldiers need during times of conflict. As we gaze upon this artwork today, let us remember those brave men who fought for our nation's unity over a century ago. Let us honor their resilience and commitment while acknowledging that wars not only shape history but also profoundly impact individuals at a personal level.
