circa 1877: Impoverished people in front of a rag shop in Lambeth, London, where the Thames annual tidal overflow causes hardship to the locals. 17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures a heartbreaking scene from the floods that plagued Lambeth, London in 1877. In front of a humble rag shop, impoverished individuals stand as silent witnesses to the annual tidal overflow of the Thames River. The hardships faced by these flood sufferers are vividly portrayed in their weary expressions and tattered clothing. The image is part of Street Life In London, a photographic plate series by Smith and Thomson published in 1877. Renowned photographer John Thomson skillfully captured this moment, showcasing his ability to convey raw emotions through his lens. As we gaze upon this historical snapshot, it serves as a reminder of the struggles endured by ordinary people during times of natural calamities. The devastating impact on local communities is evident here; lives disrupted, livelihoods lost, and hope overshadowed by despair. Through its stark portrayal of poverty-stricken men and women against the backdrop of an unforgiving flood-ravaged landscape, this photograph compels us to reflect on our own responsibility towards those affected by such disasters. It urges us to empathize with their plight and work towards building resilient communities that can withstand future challenges. John Thomson's powerful composition not only documents an unfortunate chapter in Lambeth's history but also serves as a timeless testament to human resilience amidst adversity.
