Election Ladder

6th October 1900: Two ladders front the Daily Graphic Office in the Strand, with life-size figures of Lord Salisbury and Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, climbing the ladders rung by rung in accordance with the results of seats won. A crowd is gathered to watch the results as they are announced. Original Publication: The Graphic pub. 1900 (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images)

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

Capturing the Climax of Democracy - A Snapshot from 1900 British Elections

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photograph, taken on 6th October 1900 outside the Daily Graphic Office in London's Strand, transports us back to a pivotal moment in British political history. The image showcases an ingenious visual representation of the election results through two towering ladders adorned with life-size figures of Lord Salisbury and Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman. As if suspended between heaven and earth, these prominent politicians can be seen diligently climbing their respective ladders rung by rung, symbolizing their parties' progress based on seats won. The atmosphere is electric as a crowd gathers around, anxiously awaiting each announcement that will determine the future course of governance. The composition exudes an air of anticipation and excitement as citizens eagerly engage with this unique spectacle. Their eyes fixed upon the figures ascending towards power, they are reminded of democracy's ability to elevate leaders from humble beginnings to positions of authority. Published originally in The Graphic magazine in 1900, this remarkable photograph captures not only a significant event but also serves as a testament to Britain's rich political heritage. Preserved meticulously by Hulton Archive/Getty Images for over a century, it stands as both an artistic masterpiece and historical artifact - offering us glimpses into our democratic past while inspiring contemplation about our present-day electoral processes.
