Chinese Bazaar In Lucknow

The Chinese Bazaar, Lucknow, 1858, a few months after British soldier Brigadier James George Smith Neill (1810 - 1857) was killed there in the first relief of Lucknow, during the Indian Rebellion (also known as the Indian Mutiny) of 1857. (Photo by Felice Beato/Hulton Archive/Getty Images)

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the Chinese Bazaar in Lucknow during a crucial period in history. The year is 1858, just a few months after the tragic death of British soldier Brigadier James George Smith Neill. This event occurred during the Indian Rebellion, also known as the Indian Mutiny, which shook colonial India. The image captures the aftermath of conflict and showcases an architecture now reduced to rubble. The scene is hauntingly beautiful, with its damaged buildings standing as silent witnesses to the turmoil that once engulfed this place. Felice Beato's lens skillfully portrays both destruction and resilience. In this snapshot frozen in time, we see remnants of military presence scattered throughout the bazaar. It serves as a reminder of how war can leave indelible marks on communities and landscapes alike. The contrast between light and shadow adds depth to this composition, emphasizing not only physical devastation but also symbolizing the darker aspects of colonialism itself. As we gaze upon this photograph, it becomes evident that behind these ruins lies a complex tale of power dynamics and resistance. Felice Beato's masterful capture transports us back to an era defined by conflict and struggle for independence. It invites contemplation on themes such as imperialism, identity, and historical memory. This print from Fine Art Storehouse serves as a poignant reminder of our shared past while urging us to reflect upon its implications for our present world.
