Jack Sprat Could Eat No Fat - Victorian nursery rhyme illustration

A fat woman (wearing a monstrous headdress) and her thin husband unequally share a meal while a servant brings them some drinks.
" Jack Sprat could eat no fat - His wife could eat no lean - And so betwixt them both - They lick d the platter clean."
From " Nursery Rhymes - Ridicula Rediviva" illustrated by J.E. Rogers, with chromolith printing by R. Clay Sons & Taylor and published in London in 1876 by Macmillan and Co

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this Victorian nursery rhyme illustration, we are transported back in time to witness the peculiar dining habits of Jack Sprat and his wife. The scene unfolds with a fat woman, adorned with an extravagant headdress, seated beside her thin husband at a lavishly set table. As they prepare to indulge in their meal, it becomes evident that their appetites couldn't be more different. The contrast between the two figures is striking; while Jack Sprat could eat no fat, his wife could eat no lean. This incongruity is emphasized by their unequal portions on the platter before them. Yet despite these disparities, they find harmony in sharing their culinary experience together. A servant dutifully attends to the couple's needs, bringing them refreshing drinks as they enjoy their feast. The intricate details of this illustration come alive through chromolith printing techniques employed by R. Clay Sons & Taylor during that era. This whimsical depiction from "Nursery Rhymes - Ridicula Rediviva" not only captures our attention but also invites contemplation on themes of equality and balance within relationships. It serves as a reminder that even when faced with differences or limitations, there can still be joy found in shared experiences and mutual understanding – just like Jack Sprat and his wife licking the platter clean after enjoying their unique meal together.
