Vintage engraving of the Trial of Roderick McLean for shooting at Queen Victoria. Roderick McLean attempted to assassinate Queen Victoria on March 2, 1882, at Windsor, England, with a pistol. McLeans motive was purportedly a curt reply to some poetry that he had mailed to the Queen. Tried for high treason that April 20, he was found not guilty, but insane by a jury after five minutes deliberation, and he lived out his remaining days in Broadmoor Asylum. 17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage engraving captures the dramatic Trial of Roderick McLean for his audacious attempt to assassinate Queen Victoria in 1882. The image takes us back to a pivotal moment in European history, showcasing the legal system and cultural norms of the 19th century. Roderick McLean's motive for this shocking act was said to be a curt response he received from Queen Victoria regarding some poetry he had sent her. On March 2nd, armed with a pistol, he made his way to Windsor, England, where the Queen resided. However, luck was on Her Majesty's side as McLean's shot missed its target. The trial that followed on April 20th charged McLean with high treason. After only five minutes of deliberation, the jury reached their verdict: not guilty by reason of insanity. This decision led him down an unexpected path as he spent his remaining days confined within the walls of Broadmoor Asylum. The London Illustrated News immortalized this historic event through their detailed illustration which now serves as a fascinating glimpse into both past legal proceedings and societal attitudes towards mental health during that era. As we reflect upon this print from duncan1890 at Fine Art Storehouse, it reminds us how far our understanding and treatment of mental illness has progressed since those times while also highlighting an intriguing chapter in European culture and retro revival aesthetics.
